I need to get myself a motorbike helmet, but this is the first time I am buying one. I’ve been using a motorcycle helmet from my brother, but it’s kind of busted and I don’t really like how it looks on me.

    Some questions that I have:

1.) What should I be looking for?

2.) What kind of features or safety issues should I be concerned about?

3.) Would any old helmet do?

4.) What’s a good place to get one?

    Thanks for your help!

What kind of helmet you need depends on how you will use your bike. Let’s say you want to ride it in your neighbourhood. Let’s say you will ride it to another city. These two scenarios will call for a different helmet.

How exactly do you intend to use your bike? This will allow you to get the right one. It would be rather silly to get a huge, dark helmet full of mystery just because you want to ride down the street to the convenient store!

I will be riding to work from Monday to Friday. Occasionally, I will use it on the weekends. Perhaps I may travel out of the city on some weekends, like if it is a long weekend.

Perhaps you may want to consider getting a couple of helmets. One for your daily routine and one for those weekend getaways.

No, I’m only looking to buy one helmet.

There are several types of helmets available. Of these, there is one known as a modular helmet. It is sometimes also called a flip up helmet.

This particular helmet kind of combines the benefits of a couple of other helmets into one. These two helmets are the open-face and the full-face. There is also a chin bar. This is easily flipped up, so it’s very versatile. You should get this one.

What about the fit? How do I know if it fits properly. I really didn’t care when I was learning. Now that I have a license, I want to take things seriously.

It has to fit really nice and snug. There should not be much movement or rotation when you force it with your hands. At the same time, you don’t want it so tight that it begins pinching your flesh.

Why don’t you get your helmet from GP Bikes? These guys are experts and can give you the best advice on helmets. I’ve been to their place in Whitby. I think the guy I spoke with was the owner. I believe his name is Jerry.

I am just outside of Whitby but I will check them out. I will keep the helmet you’ve mentioned in mind. Thanks a lot man!
