Hey everyone! As some of you here may know, I’m employed as a freelance graphic designer. Recently, I decided to get more serious about this line of work, and I’m in the process of launching my own website. This website is going to contain a portfolio of my artwork and designs. Since I wanted to showcase the commercial side of my designs, I’m putting my artwork on a variety of products like t-shirts, mugs, calendars, etc.

To clarify, I’m not actually manufacturing these products or anything like that. It’s more of a mock-up, where I photoshop my artwork onto t-shirts & etc. so that they’ll look more commercial. I want business owners to go to my website, see my artwork on these products, and think: “Hey, I can purchase art from this designer girl!”

Anyway, I’m in the middle of designing t-shirts. What I’m looking for are some cool and unique ideas for t-shirt designs. What kind of designs do you guys suggest?

Ooh, your very own business portfolio! That sounds exciting! Good for you! 👍

As for your question, why don’t you design something around the holidays? There are a lot of potential ideas: Easter t-shirts, Christmas t-shirts, and so on. All you have to do is look at the different types of holidays & special occasions around the world, and you’ll have plenty of ideas. Personally, I would love to see a Valentine’s Day t-shirt for him & her! I would buy it personally from you!

Thanks Ophelia. <3 Holiday t-shirts are a great idea and I’m already getting some inspiration just thinking about it. 🎨

If you’re designing holiday t-shirts, you should do something for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. I could totally see myself wearing a t-shirt that says “WORLD’S #1 MOM” with a snazzy picture, haha.

Something cute and simple like this. I would TOTALLY wear this.

You should design t-shirts based around school. Something with the text like: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior. Back when I was in college and I was doing the campus orientation, I was actually looking for custom t-shirts like this to identify the first-years from the rest of us.

Y’know, I actually just finished ordering a couple of custom t-shirts for my business, so it’s kinda funny to see a thread about something I literally just did a day ago. I’m glad to see an up-and-coming artist attempt to do something similar. In case you’re wondering, there IS a market out there.

Oh, that’s cool! Can I ask where you ordered your t-shirts from? I just wanted to see how a professional designer does it.

Well, I ordered from somebody local (just to save on shipping fees) – you can check out their website @ Brandability. They do a lot of custom products. Maybe you can browse around and get more inspiration from them.

You should do humourous t-shirt designs. Something about drinking beer, or partying, or just some kind of funny punchline that anyone can wear as a joke. Creating your own funny t-shirt can show what a great sense of humour you have too.

How about animal t-shirts? I would wear a gigantic cat meme t-shirt all day, every day. 😎😎😎

If I designed a funny cat t-shirt, you better buy one from me and upload a picture of yourself wearing my design. Do we have a deal? 😜

I always thought it would be extra cool if someone designed a t-shirt with song lyrics on them. But I guess you need a trademark to do something like that, huh?

Oh, doing a t-shirt design with a song lyric would be really interesting! I’m not really planning to sell the t-shirts with that exact design – it’s just a mock-up for my website. Hopefully that won’t infringe on anybody’s intellectual property?

Or maybe I’ll just pick a lyric from a really old song. Either way, I’m inspired!
